Album #3: “Quadrophenia” by The Who
Most people don’t know this about me - The Who were the first band I REALLY got into. At age 5 and 6 I was obsessed. My dad owns all of their CD’s and would let me listen to all of them except one - “Quadrophenia.”
Turns out the only reason he didn’t let me listen to it was because in the film adaption of the album there are uncensored boobs. Hahahaha. My Who phase passed and I never ended up listening to the album. So when I committed to listening exclusively to music I hadn’t heard, I made sure this was on my list. I couldn’t help but constantly compare “Quadrophenia” to The Who’s other rock opera “Tommy.” While “Tommy” is more consistently good, “Quadrophenia” is made up of great moments and very average moments. There are several skip-able songs on the second half in particular.
But those great moments..wow. “The Real Me,” “Is It in My Head” and “Love Reign O’er Me” are just showstoppingly amazing. Pete Townshend has an unparalleled ability to write great music while staying pretty square in his chord structures.
Also, I don’t have a goddamn clue what the story is about in “Quadrophenia” so advantage “Tommy” in that aspect.
Grade: A -
I honestly can’t decide if this is an attempt at trolling or not. You give this bullshit review and talk about average songs and not understanding the story. Then you give it an A-. The story is simple to understand and both this album and the film are some of the best work that the WHO and Pete Townsend ever did. So if you are trolling, good for you. Because it worked and I am about to explode. If you are not trolling, then you just know nothing about the WHO or about Quadrophenia in general. You, sir, are absolutely clueless.
